What is the Black Stone?
The Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) is a revered stone set into the eastern corner of the Kaaba. It is the starting and ending point for Tawaf (circumambulation).
History
According to Islamic tradition, the Black Stone was sent from Heaven and originally was white, but turned black from absorbing the sins of humanity. It was placed in the Kaaba by Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail.
Significance
Pilgrims try to kiss or touch the Black Stone during Tawaf, following the practice of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). However, if unable to reach it, pointing towards it with the right hand is sufficient.
"By Allah! On the Day of Judgment, Allah will present the Black Stone in such a manner that it will have two eyes to see and a tongue to speak, testifying for those who kissed it." — Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
