What is Tawaf?
Tawaf is the Islamic ritual of circumambulating (walking around) the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction. It is one of the key rituals of Hajj and Umrah.
Types of Tawaf
- Tawaf al-Qudum β Welcome Tawaf upon arriving in Makkah
- Tawaf al-Ifadah β Obligatory Tawaf during Hajj
- Tawaf al-Wida β Farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah
- Tawaf al-Umrah β Tawaf performed during Umrah
Rules of Tawaf
- Be in a state of Wudu (ritual purity)
- Begin at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad)
- Keep the Kaaba to your left
- Complete seven full circuits
- Pray two rakats at Maqam Ibrahim after completion
