What is Tawaf?

Tawaf is the Islamic ritual of circumambulating (walking around) the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction. It is one of the key rituals of Hajj and Umrah.

Types of Tawaf

• Tawaf al-Qudum – Welcome Tawaf upon arriving in Makkah
• Tawaf al-Ifadah – Obligatory Tawaf during Hajj
• Tawaf al-Wida – Farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah
• Tawaf al-Umrah – Tawaf performed during Umrah

Rules of Tawaf

1. Be in a state of Wudu (ritual purity)
2. Begin at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad)
3. Keep the Kaaba to your left
4. Complete seven full circuits
5. Pray two rakats at Maqam Ibrahim after completion
